Serrapeptase (also known as Serratiopeptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme originally isolated from the non-pathogenic enterobacteria Serratia marcescens, found in the intestine of the silkworm. It is classified as a serine protease that breaks down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. Serrapeptase is a metalloprotease of the thermolysin family with a zinc atom at its active site. It selectively cleaves certain amino acid bonds, enabling targeted protein degradation. Serrapeptase was early discovered to have protein solubilization ability, which can inhibit inflammatory substances and is often used as an expectorant and purulent agent.
